uMfolozi envisions a sports academy in Dondotha
uMfolozi Municipality Mayor honourable councillor Smanga Mgenge shared his dream to one day have a sport academy right in the door steps of Dondotha in KwaMthethwa. Speaking at the Siyabonga Sangweni Sports Tournament which recently took place from 19-21 June 2015, Mayor Mgenge said he plans to include this vision in the Municipality’s next integrated development Plan.
The Mayor said uMfolozi should be able to harvest its own future stars right at home, “Our young stars should not have to rely on going to cities in order for them to get the training and experience they need to be true champions like Siyabonga Sangweni, we should create a place for them to learn and grow their skills right here at home,” said Mgenge.
Orlando Pirates assistant coach Teboho Moloi welcomed the idea of a sports academy in Sangweni’s name and assured Mayor Mgenge that Pirates will assist in helping start the academy, “This is a brilliant idea because KwaZulu Natal has great soccer talent and Sangweni and many others are proof of this,” said Moloi.
He continued that pressure should not be put on the Municipality and Sangweni to hurry and build this academy but proper planning and time should be put inorder to make sure that an academy worthy of Sangweni’s name is built. “Sangweni is not an ordinary player, he plays for one of the biggest teams in South Africa and represents the national soccer team, therefore an academy in his name cannot be ordinary, only an academy worthy of producing players of his calibre should be built in Dondotha,” said Moloi.
Mayor Mgenge said although his term in office is coming to an end soon, the foundations for the academy will be laid firmly for the Municipality to continue accordingly in realising his vision of a worthy sports academy in KwaDondotha.
