Siyabonga Sangweni Youth Festival and Mayoral Sports Day Event

The Siyabonga Sangweni Sports Tournament held at the KwaDondotha sports field in uMfolozi was a huge success. The three-day sporting fiesta, which took place from 7 July 19 June – 9 July 2017, saw teams across the area of King Cetshwayo District Municipality and uMfolozi battle it out for the title of being called the champions in chess, boxing soccer, netball, Induku and Mountain Climbing.

The sporting extravaganza served as a youth holiday programme, kick-started on Day one with a Department of Human Settlements Career Expo and exhibition for all uMfolozi Municipality high schools grades 10 – 12.

On the sidelines there was also Creative Industry Workshops for young entrepreneurs in the creative sector, as the municipality partnered with the KZN Fashion Council, Department of Arts and Culture, and National Film and Video Foundation. There was also a section for school sports focusing on primary schools and coaching clinics.

Day two of the programme featured different sporting codes, of soccer, netball, boxing, chess and a mountain challenge. These sporting codes games were played on a knock out system to get into semi- finals and finals the following day.

The creative industry activities on day two included local South African movie screenings as part of audience development, a two hour fashion and poetry session, and a battle of the DJ’s session.
Day three of the programme, offered the exciting opportunity to view a friendly match between uKhozi FM and KZN PSL legends, as well as the kick-off of the semi- finals and finals.

This year’s programme was more than just a once-off event as the municipality worked with different partners to add value and create networks for our youth in sports tourism, fashion, economic development and entertainment.
