The Siyabonga Sangweni Youth Month Festival and Mayoral Sport Day held at the KwaDondotha sports field in uMfolozi proved once again to be a huge success.

The four-day sporting fiesta, which took place from 28 June 2018 – 1 July 2018, has shown that it is possible to successfully merge a perfect balance of sports and youth development within uMfolozi and the surrounding areas.

Launch of Intombi Project a Success

Day one of the Youth Festival kicked off with the young women’s empowering programme called then Intombi Project which was coordinated by the office of the premier and National Treasury Department in the King Cetshwayo District Municipality.

Minister of Women in the Presidency, Ms. Bathabile Dlamini accompanied by Member of Parliament and chairperson of Human Settlements Portfolio, Ms. Nocawe Mafu, Deputy Mayor Cllr SR Thabethe and ward councillors officially launched the Intombi Project. The Project aims to empower young girls in rural communities on life skills and steering them away from social ills.

Minister Bathabile Dlamini stressed the importance of knowing your roots and urged the young girls to pursue careers in the Maritime and Engineering fields. Minister Dlamini handed over five Galaxy Tablet to five girls who participated in a quiz where she was asking them questions about South African History.

Career Expo Exposes Learners to Better Opportunities

Day two of the Siyabonga Sangweni Youth Month Festival held the annual Career Expo which hosted more than 3500 learners from 28 schools within the uMfolozi Municipality. Delivering her keynote address, Human Settlements Minister Nomaindiya Mfeketo appealed to young people to seize available educational and job opportunities in the human settlements sector. Minister Mfeketo further emphasized the importance of education and encouraged the learners to dream big and study anything they want to in order to live fulfilling lives.

More than 30 exhibitors were part of the Career Expo and introduced various career opportunities to the learners. Maths and Science Infinity handed over a Mobile laboratory to Mbuso Wabathethwa School to assist Maths and Science learners with practicals.

Sport and Entertainment Extravaganza for uMfolozi Community

Day three and four focused more on sports and the promotion of the different sporting codes which the community of uMfolozi are now engaging in.

The different sporting codes included Cross Country, Boxing, Soccer, Netball, Rugby, Mountain Climbing, Quad Biking, Chess, Induku and Motor Racing.

The Volkswagen Automaker company commonly known as VW sponsored the under 13 soccer competition, this was aimed to give the Junior Masters an opportunity to shine worldwide through soccer and the winning team will get an opportunity to showcase their talent in Germany. The VW Company also handed over soccer kits to the under 13-football and netball teams.

Musicians such as Khuzani, Igcokama Eisha, Thokozani Langa, Mzukulu, Qhosha ngokwenzakwakhe, Indoni, Bongani Mavuso, Bhekani Ndwandwe, Cevuzile amongst others entertained the crowds as well as 40 local artists who will benefit from the exposure of performing in front of 20000 people.

A soccer match between legends took place with soccer legends such as Doctor Khumalo, Lebogang Cheese Boy Mokoena, Stanton Fredericks, Joseph Dukuduku Makhanya, Donald Khuse, Bongani Benedict Vilakazi, Steve Lekolea, Arthur Zwane, Jerry Skhosana and Thandanani Ntshumayelo taking part in it.

The  Siyabonga Sangweni Youth Month Festival and Mayoral Sport Day provides a platform for Siyabonga Sangweni and the uMfolozi Municipality to raise awareness on issues such as the abuse of drugs and other substances, teenage pregnancy, rape, unemployment, murder, while at the same time helping promote youth development.
