According to the uMfolozi Municipality’s first plenary meeting for the Siyabonga Sangweni Sports Tournament which took place on Thursday 11 June 2015, everything is geared up for another successful tournament. In its third year the Siyabonga Sangweni Tournament has become a proud event for the Municipality and its citizens.

The three day event which will take place from the 19th – 21st of June 2015 at the Dondotha Sports Field KwaMthethwa, is aimed at tackling social ills which plague communities in uMfolozi, will have four different sporting codes which will include Soccer, Netball, Boxing and Induku to cater for the different community members sporting codes.

The plenary meeting which was chaired by Municipal Manager; Mr KE Gamede, was also attended by Honourable Mayor; Cllr  S’manga Mgenge and Municipal councillors, placed a resolution budget of R2 million for the tournament which will be raised through engagements of various Government Departments and business stakeholders.

The tournament was established in 2013 by soccer star Siyabonga Sangweni together with uMfolozi Municipality who wanted to give back to his hometown through sports which has afforded him so many opportunities. Under the theme “Sports is Life” Sangweni and the Municipality wanted to raise awareness on issues of dire concern for his community. Issues such as the abuse of drugs, teenage pregnancy, rape, unemployment and murder while also promoting youth development, ways to alleviate poverty and exposing the youth to various government services.

Siyabonga Sangweni along with a number of PSL players will attend the tournament while musicians such as Sifiso Ncwane, Thokozani Langa and a number of local artists will entertain the crowds.

Mayor; Cllr S’manga Mgenge said he wanted this year’s tournament to be better than before, “The Municipality will cater for community members  wishing to be part of this great event, there will be jumping castles for the children to entertain themselves while the adults watch the on-going sport competitions,” he said.

Ten thousand people attended last year’s tournament and the number is expected to be doubled this year, all safety and security measures have been placed to make sure that a safe and successful tournament the youth and community of uMfolozi will enjoy takes place.
