uMfolozi Municipality Celebrates with High Achieving 2016 Matric Learners

The uMfolozi Municipality held the 2016 Matric Awards Ceremony to honour the top achieving matriculants in uMfolozi, on Friday, 20 January 2017 at the uMfolozi Municipal Hall. A hundred and sixteen deserving learners were awarded with bursaries and certificates, while the top ten high achieving schools were awarded for their commitment to producing22 quality education.

The top ten learners were awarded full bursaries and laptops to apply at any higher tertiary institution of their choice within South Africa. The remaining learners were awarded registration bursaries to help them kick start they funding at tertiary level.

uMfolozi Mayor Cllr Smanga Mgenge congratulated the learners achievement and said this awards ceremony is the municipality’s is response to national government call to help end poverty within our community. “It’s takes a village to raise a child and this is why the Municipality has taken a pro-active role in developing the lives of the children of uMfolozi,” said Mayor Mgenge. The Mayor further stated that the education is the right path towards ending the high rate of unemployment, “We urge the private sector to help assist to help our youth become independent individuals through education and help them set up stable businesses,” said Mayor Mgenge.

Municipal Manager Mr Khulumowakhe Gamede said the Municipality has three main objectives of promoting education as a key tool to fight poverty, “Having learners who are committed to being academic achievers, creates easier access for them to higher institutions of learning, which will in return continue the cycle good academic achievements amongst learners before them, thus encouraging the teachers to continue helping learners produce outstanding results,” said Municipal Manager Gamede.

Phakama Kwanele Mthethwa from Welabasha High School who is the highest achieving learner within the uMfolozi Municipality, said he is still shocked at his achievement but is excited to attend university. Phakama will study Medicine at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
