Under the theme “Kuguga othandayo” The Senior Citizens Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Campaign, aimed to promote a healthy active lifestyle amongst the elderly community residents, while also promoting the protection of elderly citizens in our communities and family environment.

In partnership with the Department of Social Development, Department of Sport and Recreation, Department of Health and Age In Action; uMfolozi Municipality has come up with a programme called “Active Ageing” which aims to create an enabling environment for the elderly community to be able to create a social cohesive community that promotes empowerment and the protection of elderly persons while also educating the elderly and the rest of the community on the rights and safety of senior citizens.

Special Programmes Manager Mr Ntuthuko Khanyile said uMfolozi Municipality believes that a municipality can only succeed if it takes care of it most vulnerable citizens. “The Municipality takes care of its elderly as per the president mandate in 2012, that there should be programmes for the elderly to improve and encourage good health and fitness amongst the elderly community,” said Mr Khanyile.

Age in Action’s representative Mrs Mkhize educated the elderly residents present on Alzheimer disease symptom, treatment and causes and encouraged the elderly to report any symptoms to family members and nearest health care practitioners. Provincial Departments of Health’s Nutritional Specialists, Sister Gumede and Mrs Ndlovu encouraged the elderly to always stay active and healthy in order to live a healthier productive lifestyle.

The uMfolozi Municipality recognises that in poor areas, elderly citizens are usually the head of the household in their homes and continue being the primary caregivers for their grandchildren, disabled and HIV/AIDS infected family members. Sister Gumede further encouraged the elderly to also be active in their grandchildren’s lives by encouraging them to visit their local family planning clinic in order to avoid unplanned pregnancies.

Ward ten Councillor, Cllr Mkhize welcomed the guests and community members that were present and welcomed the senior citizens to participate in the Golden Games catered for the elderly.
